What Is Codependency?
Codependency isn’t just about being “too nice” or “needing people.” It’s a deeply rooted pattern where your sense of worth becomes entangled with someone else’s emotions, behaviors, or approval. You may feel responsible for managing others, avoid conflict at all costs, or lose yourself in caregiving—even when it’s draining or one-sided. Over time, codependency can erode your identity, breed resentment, and leave you feeling empty, anxious, or unlovable when you’re not needed.
These patterns often form early in life—especially in families where love felt conditional, boundaries were blurred, or emotional caretaking was expected. But they can be unlearned.
Signs of Codependency:
Prioritizing others’ needs while ignoring your own
Difficulty setting or maintaining boundaries
Fear of abandonment or being “too much”
Constant people-pleasing, guilt, or conflict avoidance
Low self-worth or identity that depends on a partner’s approval
Feeling anxious, resentful, or exhausted in relationships
Getting stuck in toxic dynamics and having a hard time leaving
A strong need to be needed—or to “fix” others
